INDEPENDENCE WINS CULPEPPER TROPHY AT HOMETOWNE
REGATTA:   Graham Field and his crew won the Garland
Culpepper Trophy by finishing  the furthest ahead of the 2nd place boat in
his fleet (3 minutes, 13 seconds), Tantrum.  24 boats actually
turned out to face the cranky nor'east wind (20-22 knots) Saturday
mourning and were repaid for valor by constant breezes and a sparkling
sail.  The 13 mile course around fixed marks in Hampton Roads Harbor ended
with a downwind dash to the finish in the Elizabeth River off Craney
Island.    RESULTS:  PHRF B (3 boats):  1.
Independence (Islander 36, Graham
Field);  PHRF C (6 boats):
1. About Time (Capri 25, Bob Archer); 2.
Cavitation (J/24, Chris Duer); 3. Beowulf
(Seidelmann 29, Bob Old).  PHRF Non-Spin (9
boats):  1. Solas (Tartan 37, Bobby Burnell);
2. Zing (Hunter 37, Doug Creecy); 3. Impulse
(Catalina 34, Tom Peddy).  Cruising (6
boats):  1. Seadated (Pearson 26, Claude
Nix); 2. Naiad (Catalina 30, George Corbus);
3. Windswept (Hunter 34, Michael Cummings).
PRO: John
McCarthy;  Official Scorer: Dick Boykin;  Signal Boat Skipper: Paul
Brindle.
Beware!  Mad crabs to greet racers
after HYC Annual Regatta!  There will be  a keg and
steamed crabs waiting for post-race party goers on the HYC
docks.
Homies
visit home:  "Expatriate" southern Bay racer Doug
Deruex visited last week from his and Cecy's
(nee Castruccio) current home in St. Thomas.  Doug sailed
with a lot of southern Bay racers, but he was most often with Charlie
Cameron (Eastern Shore Yacht Club), when Charlie was campaigning
his J/22 in Oxford, MD, and beyond.
Here comes the
Race to Cock Island:  Festivities begin
Friday, June 25 with the race itself on Saturday, June 26.  For info call
PortsEvents at (757) 393-9933.
Are you eavesdropping
while racing?  Most sailing instructions publish a particular VHF
channel for racers to monitor for race committee announcements during
racing.  Usually, the RC sets up another "private" channel of
communications among RC signal boat and support boats.  If you are
listening in on that "private" channel,  could you be considered as
receiving outside help under Rule 41?  Some Race Committees say "yes" and
they are writing the "thou shalt not" into the Sailing instructions.  Think
about it.

MURPHY'S LAW:
YIKES!!  The Screwpile Regatta BOW (rhymes with WOW) numbers
already issued are up in the 80's as of last week.   Only 33
days left before the first race warning signal at the 2004
Screwpile Regatta.  And, just as important, only 32 days left
before the party-ing begins (skippers meeting and registration Saturday, July
17th)!  Living to race, racing to live.  Murphy the Racing Beagle,
the sailing spirit in us all
