HAPPY DAY-AFTER FATHER'S
DAY, SAILING DADS!
COCK ISLAND RACE -
Saturday, June 26, 2004.  Pull out your crazy chicken suit and get yourself
down to ICW Mile Marker Zero.  This is the 17th annual Cock Island
Race; non-sanctioned, mono-hull only, a race surrounded by a party.
Skippers Meeting and race check-in are Friday,  June 25, at
Portsmouth's North Landing area on the seawall.  For info contact
PortsEvents at (757) 393-9933.
Kahuna wins A
Fleet HYC Big Boat Annual and Defiant Defies C
Fleet:   The HYC Big Boat Annual Regatta ran Saturday off
Willoughby Spit on the Big Bay side.  Winds with more shifts than
a NASCAR pole sitter  led to three mark moves during the race.  Great
racing in warm temps on a lumpy, but friendly Bay.  RESULTS:  PHRF
A: 1. Kahuna, Sanford Richardson; 2. Check
Six, John Scott / Brian Deibler; 3. Feather,
Phil Briggs,  PHRF B: (Protests Pend) 1. Cheryl
Lea, Ben Weeks; 2. Cool Change, Rusty
Burshell; 3. Rhumb Line, Bill Chandler.
PHRF C: 1. Defiant, Bill Derr; 2. About
Time, Bob Archer; 3. Incentive, Louie
Lewis.  PHRF Non Spin:  1.  Virginia H,
Andy Armstrong; 2. Checks in the Mail, Jim
Williams; 3. Impulse, Tom Peddy.  PRO:
Dick Boykin; Signal Boat:  John McCarthy;  Mark Boat: Glenn
Giles.
Cock Island Race Spectator
Boat -  if you cannot be on an  actual race boat, the next
best place for this traditional area happening may be on the official race
spectator boat, the Carrie B.  If you want to be
an on-the-water spectator to this annual spectacle, contact Harbour
Tours at (757) 393-4735.  Better call today - she'll probably fill up
fast.
Watch your flag
etiquette:  Those who know about this kind of thing say you must
not fly the Stars and Stripes while racing - it's a no-no.  It's OK
to fly the flag going to or from the race course, just not while racing -
it's considered disrespectful to the flag.  And, beyond that, USSAILING RRS
55 " ...prescribes that a boat shall not display flags except for
signaling."
Biker
Banter:  Gremellyn, C&C30 2XL,  usually
found racing in PHRF B anytime there is a southern Bay event going down, stayed
home this weekend - but, her skipper did not.  Greg Cutter
is, or should be, about mid-way, in a 4,000 mile journey on his chopper with
seven other bikers, who are headed north into Canada toward the southern edge of
the Arctic Circle.  Mind you now, they say toward;  we'll
hear from them upon return on how close they got!
IMPORTANT:
Troubled Bridge over River Waters:  Garland Gray passes along
information that is important  to southern Bay racers and cruisers:
The swing bridge at the mouth of the Chickahominy River at the
James River is about to be replaced with a fixed span of 45 or 51 feet
(planned height  has changed).   A number of Tidewater area
sailors and visitors have used the Chickahominy as a hurricane
hole.  The height of the bridge is crucial, of course.
Garland passes along two key points of contact for the public to call to
comment on the project:  Terry Knowles with the Coast Guard at
(757) 398-6222 and Larry Hedgepath with VDOT at (804)
786-6369.  Pick up the phone and dial now -
if Isabel's cousin shows up this fall,  your comments could be too
late!
Why is it called
Cock Island?  Cock Island is an old nickname for
Portsmouth, Virginia, because the City was the center of cock fighting
back in the day when such things went on.  A  tough rooster was a good
thing before email, KFC, nuggets, bridge tunnels, and fiberglass
boats.

The 12th Annual West Marine Bermuda
Cup leaves Hampton, Tuesday, June 22.  Steve
Black is leading the fleet and will sail with past winner
Harry Weber in his new Beneteau 47.7.  Bluewater
Sailing editor, Greg Jones, is expected aboard a NY based
Catalina 47.
News from
the North Carolina Racers:  Southern Bay racers are seeing
the arrival of some North Carolina racers on the southern Bay scene,
particularly at multi-day regattas.  Here are the results from the
NCYRA Championships as well as the Wilmington Group
Offshore Race (previously known as the Wachovia Cup):  NCYRA
Championships, Spinnaker A:  1.  Teamwork, J/105,
Robin Team; 2. Rum at Six, J/105, Worth
Harris; 3. Cash Flow, Hadley 40, Lloyd
Griffin.  Spinnaker B:  1. Devil Dog, B25,
Don Gray;  2. Rocket J, J/30, Randy
Boyles; 3. Renegade, J/30, Dennis
O'Neal;  4. Sweet Baby, J/80,
Alston/Coleman;  Non-Spinnaker:  1. Kari'd
On, San Juan 28, Larry Hites; 2. Sola Gratia,
Alberg 37, Cheryl Smith.   WGOR:
Spinnaker:  1. Teamwork, J/120, Robin Team;
2. Sundance, Beneteau First 415; Murray Seidel;
Non-Spinnaker: 1. Sola Gratia, Alberg 37, Cheryl
Smith;  2.  Islena, Islander 37, Jeff
Fisher.
Notable junior southern Bay racer,
Chris Behm, along with crew Meg Callahan, is
among 149 youngsters selected by US SAILING to compete in the prestigious
U.S. Youth Sailing Championship in Charleston, SC,  this coming
week.  Racing begins Tuesday.
FBYC Spring Series One
Design Winners:  The 5 day series wrapped up with three classes
declaring "leader of the pack" awards for the first part of the season.
Here are the current top dogs:  FLYING SCOT (22 races, 13 boats): 1.
Phil Webb/Owen Davidson; 2. Jim Hess/Richard
Dickoff; 3. Allan Heyward/Mike Massie.  FRONT
RUNNER (21 boats, 5 racers): 1. Lee and Rick Farinhold; 2.
Matt and Al Braun; 3. Bill Spencer/Kenney
Cobb.  LASER (21 races, 7 boats): 1. Brad
Squires; 2. Jon Deutsch; 3. Alain
Vincey.  The MOBJACK class got in only one day of racing -
two boats battled it out in 4 races and Tom Roberts/Gary Woods
won the day.
More racers on
wheels:  There are other sailboat racers who are modern day bikers
on the road.  Marvin Sylvest, a long time crew member on
Phil Briggs' J/36, Feather, and Scottie
Dyer, who used to race his C&C 33 Star Dancer in the
southern Bay and in North Carolina, are road warriors.   And, Joe
and Susan Bousquet, both Moth sailors in good standing, are
currently peddling  across the country (that's from Pacific
to Atlantic) on a tandem bicycle to celebrate their 25th wedding
anniversary.
Go for the Battle of
the Chesapeake Trophy at Screwpile: This is a
competition among yacht clubs and sailing associations that have boats racing at
Screwpile.  A club has to have at least a total of 5 boats entered in
Screwpile (at least one boat in at least two different fleets, one of which is a
spinnaker fleet) in order to compete for the trophy.  No further action is
required on the part of the clubs.  It's just that easy to be registered
for the trophy...  after that, the honor will be decided by the racers on
the race course!  (The Battle of the Chesapeake Trophy will be awarded
based on race results and number of boats entered by a given club.)  Get
your gang, come on to Screwpile, and take home braggin' rights for your
club!
Movin' On
keeps on movin' :  Mike Austin and the crew of Movin' On
(Beneteau FC8)  continue to tear up the southern Bay.  A week ago
they won the York River Cup with two bullets over second place
finisher Steve Bowen's Dream On.  Barry
Campbell won the Non-Spinnaker fleet at the event in his Pearson
30, Jade.
Newport to Bermuda:
The fleet departed Newport, Rhode Island, on  Friday, June
18.  Expect that the cooks on Orion and on
Prevail did some careful planning.  Word
is that this could be a mostly light air race and the food may have to last a
while.  Also, out there with our southern Bay racers in this event, is
CBYRA president, John Dodge, aboard Donnybrook as a
trimmer/driver.  Direct reports from Orion speak of light east
wind, foggy fog, and light (hopefully building ) west wind.  The fleet is
for the most part around the mid point of the trip mileage wise.
Annapolis to
Bermuda :  34 boats began this race on June 11,  and as of
Sunday morning, 7 had dropped out [and most of those were motoring on to
Bermuda] and two abandoned early on in the race.  Boats should soon be
reporting finish times.
Hampton to Bermuda:  West Marine Bermuda
Cup departs tomorrow, Tuesday.
Southern Bay at
Screwpile:  The number of southern Bay boats going to Screwpile has jumped
to 25.  Add to the previous 20 listed, Night Music (J/29,
Sam Marshall, FBYC); Chilcoot (Quest 30, Alex
Alvis, FBYC); Gremellyn (C&C 30 2XL, Greg
Cutter, HYC); Cash Flow (Hadley 40, Lloyd
Griffin, OBSA), and Titillation (J/29, Paul
Andersen).  NOTE:  Titillation is listed as sailing
for AYC, but southern Bay racers know those roots are deep in Deltaville/Fishing
Bay, Virginia.  We will soon reach brigade strength - get entered
now.  There are PHRF spin and non-spin fleets, plus one design racing for
those classes who bring 7 or more boats.  www.screwpile.com
Because so many asked, here's the
McBear (Shamrock 22) update - she is SOLD and gone
fishing!

MURPHY'S
LAW:   Being a racing beagle, I always look forward to
the upcoming Cock Island Race. Beagles never-ever turn up their noses to any
type of beer or chicken, be it fried, baked, or
bar-b-qued!  And, to think, I don't have to do the "hunting" thing -
the food is right there in the tents beside the beer trucks!  I'll stick to
gathering only!    Living to race, racing to live.
