# 362 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
on Monday September 24, 2007 09:15AM
Yesterday, September 23rd, was officially the first
day of Autumn.  Don't be alarmed; we don't end Daylight Savings Time
until November 4th.  Keep on sailing!
Hospice Turkey Shoot update -
(Racing Sat, October 6 and Sunday, October 7)  There are more than 100 boats on the
regatta T-shirt (early entries), and it looks like this is going to be
quite a happening up on the Rap Rivah!   The Rappahannock River
at its most beautiful time,  three days of socializing, a Friday evening
Competitors Clinic led by event Principal Race Officer John McCarthy,
racing on Saturday and Sunday,  the historic yacht  Miss Ann
from Tides Inn  (Irvington, VA) serving as the official spectators
boat,  and much, much more.  To enter go to the event website at www.hospiceturkeyshootregatta.com
CYRANO,  WHITE BOAT,
INCENTIVE  and WIKI WIKI  win the CCV
day!    The fleet racing was close, more than a few
finishes at the line by a nose.  Rodney Paice, Wiki
Wiki, took two wins in PHRF Non-Spin.  Each fleet had a tie to be
broken somewhere in the standings for the day.  The weather was terrific
and the racing was hammer and tong - that's as good as it gets!
RESULTS:  PHRF A (10 boats):  1.Cyrano,
Bob Mosby (2-1); 2.Sea Star, Dave
Eberwine (1-3); 3.Cash Flow, Lloyd Griffin
(4-2).  PHRF B (10 boats): 1.White Boat, Dave
McConaughy (1-2); 2.PF Flyer, Larry Preddy
(2-4); 3.Cool Change, Rusty Burshell (6-1).
PHRF C (7 boats): Incentive, Louie
Lewis (3-1); 2.Roundabout, Alan Bomar (1-3);
3.Quicky, Mike Veraldi (4-2).  PHRF Non-Spin
(5 boats):  1.Wiki Wiki, Rodney Paice (1-1);
2.Margarita, Harry Tenney (3-2); 3.Impulse,
Tom Peddy (2-3).  PRO - John McCarthy;  Official
Timer/Scorer - Dick Boykin; Mark Boats - Bill Gibbings and Dave
Hamilton.
The final day of CCV Fall Series will be Sunday,
OCTOBER 14.  For info and to enter contact John McCarthy at
757-850-4225.
Neptune's Atlantic Race, this coming Saturday,
September 29.  This is a CBYRA sanctioned event and counts for the
Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing Series.  BBSA hosts the event in
coordination with the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival.  The race starts
just north of Little Creek, rounds Cape Henry, and finishes off the Virginia
Beach oceanfront.  Friday skippers meeting, bags, T-shirts, post-race party
- the whole kit and caboodle. Entry deadline is Tuesday, tomorrow, September 25
at 5PM.  For entry info and details  contact Scott Almond at (757)
471-2663
WHITE BOAT  heads for J/30 North
American Championships in Annapolis:  Dave McConaughy's J/30 will
head north early this week and hopes are high she will bring home another
championship.  White Boat will have an all southern Bay
team:  Dave and Kim McConaughy, Ken Saylor, Mike Austin, Glenn
Gates, Jimmy Haines, Tripp Behm, and Rusty Burshell.  Racing
begins Friday and goes through Sunday.  Keep all those southern Bay fingers
and toes crossed for our boat!
Takin' Care of the Skipper -  Yesterday
there was some big time TLC going on on Valkyrie, the Dehler 39 that
belongs to Karl and Senta Petersen.  The
crew had retrieved Karl from his couch, where he has been forced to "potato"
since he broke his leg weeks ago, and assigned him "tacticating" duties as he
rode along in the stern during the racing.
Well-known Southern Bay racers Michelle Cochran and
Ben Weeks, tied the matrimonial knot this past weekend.  Ben has
sailed his J/29 Rumble  all over the southern Bay and Michelle has
crewed on numerous race boats, often with the Battlewagon gang when
John Hanna was owner/skipper.
Congratulations!
Singlehand Race - This coming Sunday, September
30.  Sponsored by Hampton Yacht Club.  The race takes place
in Hampton Roads Harbor.  Skippers meeting at high noon at HYC.
Special requirements:  Life Jackets worn at all times; No spinnakers; No
headsail changes; No autopilots; No whisker poles.  For info, contact Kathy
Brady at (757) 723-3244.
Build it and race it -   Doug Power of
Irvington, VA, and Franz Baichl of Carter Creek near Irvington,
have teamed up and built a boat that they intend to race in the Hospice
Turkey Shoot Regatta (hosted by Yankee Point Marina) October 5-7.  Doug
and Franz used a 1932 design by L. Francis Herreshoff  for their 28
foot daysailer ketch.  Volare and her builders are featured in an
article in the October issue of Chesapeake Bay Magazine (page
14).
Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel's
Hobie 33, had an interesting mark rounding yesterday ,when they "tea-bagged" one
of the crew.  He went overboard, was dunked, and hauled back aboard, all
while they rounded the leeward mark.
Deep thought -  The 2007 Olson 30
National Championships were sailed on Lake Tahoe.  Not only is the Lake
extremely clear, it is extremely deep - average depth of 1,000 feet, deepest
spot 1,645 feet.  So, anchor roads for marks get special attention and
racers are constantly on the look out for Nessie!
Craig Olsen sails his Olson 30, Namesake, on the
southern Bay, where even our big ship channels are no where near as deep as Lake
Tahoe.
Willoughby Sunday
Series Keeps on Keepin' On -  The Sunday afternoon gathering of
dinghy racers on Willoughby Bay grew some more yesterday.  9 Lasers and 4
420s welcomed the addition of 2 Sunfish newcomers.  The message from this
fun group is, "If ya got a dinghy, bring it over and sail it!"  For info
contact Leon Garber at (757) 615-7154 or Emory Nemeth
at (757) 549-1788   The Series is hosted by BBSA and
NNSA.
Mitch Brindley, head sailing coach at Old
Dominion University, is also president of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing
Association (ICSA).  As such, he is leading the organization in it's
effort to develop guidelines that make the conduct of competition
(scheduling, practice time limits, recruiting, etc) more like other [NCAA
administered] college sports.
Media Watch - SAILING, October issue
(page 14),   has a nice piece in the 2007
Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge Regatta.  Pete Hunter's beauty,
Wairere (Thompson 30), skims across the top of the page.  Pete and
the Wairere bunch, sailing out of Kill Devil Hills, NC,  won
Southern Bay Race Week this year.

MURPHY'S LAW:  Don't
leap to judgment.  Those are not extra pounds you see on Yrs Truly, the
Racing Beagle - just growing my Fall layers.  You better find
your long undies too, 'cuz there's lots of great racing left in this here
season.   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit
in us all.
