Gary Jobson is a household name in racing sailors'
homes. We all know who he is. Our man in New Zealand for the
America's Cup. Mr. ESPN of our sport. He often comes into the
southern Chesapeake Bay to offer his name and presence to boost a worthwhile
cause or just to share his thoughts with racers about the current state
of our sport. He has for the last 11 years given a huge portion of
his energy on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Cup Regatta.
This morning Gary Jobson began chemo treatments for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Gil Renaut sent word that Gary was diagnosed a couple
of days ago. To quote Gil's email:
The news is serious, but not immediately dire:
although he has a growth in his abdomen about the size of a fist, is virtually
too weak to walk, and has been having difficulty breathing for several
weeks, liver and lung scans came back clean -- a good sign. His
spirits are good and he is determined to fight this. LLS has arranged
for its best specialists and researchers to check up on him and work with
him as his treatment progresses. Gary says he will see us on the
water by the end of summer. And the folks at LLS say there's every
reason to remain hopeful for him.
It is now we racers can recall that Gary Jobson is more
than just the really good guy we all know him to be. He is a national
treasure. He is one of us. A prayer or a positive thought for
Gary could not hurt.
