#176 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

For 2004, think about the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy.  The 2003 US SAILING OFFSHORE CHAMPIONSHIP was held in October in Annapolis and it was won by a team from Rochester, NY, Area E.  The Chesapeake Bay (CBYRA) is a part of Area C.  The skipper and crew that represented Area C (our Area) in the competition were from a J/44, Vamp (Skipper Leonard Sitar, Holmdel, NJ).  Areas A and B finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.  Area C did not get a sniff of "a place in the money."  Wouldn't it be nice if next year we could nominate a boat from the southern Bay for the Area C slot, and maybe, just maybe, make it to the championship at Long Beach Yacht Club (California) on the "Far Side".  It will take a lot of effort on the part of one of the top keel boat teams - they'd have to do some of the very big regattas, e.g. Block Island, Key West, etc.,  as well as the big Bay events, since much depends on the boat's racing resume for 2004.  To secure a nomination, you have to win the paper (and "politics")  battle as well as the regattas. Ask Sledd Shelhorse and Ron McLean - the crew of Sledd's Promises won the whole thing in 1993.  Just a thought - the racers have to come from somewhere; might as well be here.

THE MARINERS' MUSEUM BRINGS A BIG TIME MOVIE TO HAMPTON: Master and Commander:  The Far Side of the World   is a new movie based on the works of Patrick O'Brian.  Sunday, November 16, 2003, at YRC Riverdale Coliseum 12 TMM will sponsor the event which includes a screening of the movie, a discussion of the movie and the time period, and samples of the food the crews aboard ships of those times ate. Sounds like fun, especially for sailors who are history buffs.  To make ressies call Anne Marie Millar at (757) 591-7748.

CCV Special Award Recipients:  Sportsmanship Award belongs to Mike Nestor, owner/skipper of Glory Days.  This award goes to the "...individual who conducts himself as a gentleman and distinguishes himself by his concern for fair competition both on and off the course."  Receiving the Clyde Winters Race Committee Award are co-recipients  John McCarthy,  Dick Boykin,  Cheryl Weeks,  Glenn Giles,  Bill Gibbings and  Lin McCarthy. The Commodore's Award, chosen by the 2003 CCV Commodore (Dave Bouchard), is presented in recognition of an individual (or group) who has "...made a significant contribution to furtherance of the sport of sailing."  The 2003 award goes to Graham Field and Ben Owens (posthumous).  In addition to the annual awards, CCV  presented an extra-special award to Dick Boykin for all his efforts for the sport of sailboat racing in the southern Bay, including his dedication to his duties as official scorer for the entire area.

GABOON RACE SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23 - This is a great season ender.  The Gaboon  is a pursuit race, i.e. the PHRF corrections are taken at the start; therefore, the slower boats start first and everyone finishes at the exact same time - RIGHT!!! The start/finish line is in front of Hampton Yacht Club.  This event is open to all. For entry info contact Phil Briggs at (757) 244-5477.

2004 CCV Board of Directors Named:  Commodore - John McCarthy;  Vice-Commodore - Dave McConaughy;  Secretary-Treasurer - Dave Taylor;  Board Members: Ron Lewis, Justin Morris, Christian Schaumloffel, Dave Bouchard, Tom Peddy, Karl Petersen, Neal Garrett, Bob Mosby and Huey Fourquet.

The Gaboon Spittoon, awarded to the overall winner of the Gaboon Race (November 23, 2003), really is a spittoon.  Gaboon awards, including the Gaboon Spitoon, are presented at the HYC Annual Awards Night on December 9.

Because many of you have been asking about McBear, the photo-taking, mark pulling, RC duty-ing Shamrock 22 often seen on the southern Bay this past season, the boat is for sale. McBear is loaded with electronic equipment and, among other things, is a fisherman's dream.  A replacement for McBear is on the way - a 28 foot Down-East SeaWorthy, lobster boat look alike, will take on RC and photo duties as required.  If you are interested in purchasing McBear (2001 Shamrock), contact Ron or Kitty McLean at Bay Harbor Brokerage at (757) 480-1073 or John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.  Yes, this is a blatantly obvious FOR SALE notice!

There is a new J/30 racer baby on the Bay.  Bob and Marion Rutsch  (Bob is the 2003 President of CBYRA) are the proud new parents of William McHenry Rutsch, who arrived last week and measured in at 7 pounds 15 ounces and 21 inches long.  When he is able to go out on their J/30, he will be the 3rd generation of Rutsches on the boat along with Bob and his dad.

MURPHY'S LAW:   Great CCV Party!  Great food, great music, and great crowd!  But, the best part was that the bartender had a drip pan under the beer tap that was just racing beagle high - AHHHHH-OOOOOOO! Living to race, racing to live. /s/ Murphy the Racing Beagle
