KWRW Started Wild and Woolly:  Conditions for the 295 entries at the 2005 Key West Race Week  featured challenging winds and seas the first couple of days.  The McAllister/Silver JS9000, A Lil' Tipsy (Colington Harbor), suffered a broken mast before the actual racing began according to team followers and did not make it to the starting line during the event.  Here's how our southern Bay  (and beyond) boats did in fleets overall standings:  PHRF 2 (10 boats): Sanford Richardson's Farr 395, Kahuna (Hampton) finished 6th.   PHRF 3 (12 boats): Peter Hunter's Thompson 30, Wairere (Kill Devil Hills) took 3rd and Walter Kennedy's Henderson 30, Savannah (Charlotte) was 7th.  PHRF 4 (9 boats):Othmar von Blumencron's Beneteau 40.7, Dame Blanche (Great Falls, VA), took 2nd while Lloyd Griffin's Hadley 40, Cash Flow (Elizabeth City) finished 7th.  PHRF 7 (10 boats):  Mike Karn (Deltaville) brought Insatiable, G&S 27, in 4th.  PHRF 8 (12 boats):   Dan Ledbetter's J/24 Gladiator (Charlotte) was 10th.   J/80 One Design (16 boats):  Robin Team's Sweet Baby J (Beaufort, NC), was 11th.  And, in the 40 boat J/105 One Design Fleet:   Worth Harris' Rum at Six (Beaufort, NC) finished 17th.      Complete results for 2005 KWRW are posted at www.premiere-racing.com

Good Grief - one of the most active and best sailed J/30s in the southern Bay is Bill and Lynn Chandler's Rhumb Line!  (RL was inadvertently left out of the J/30 info in issue #232 mention of southern Bay J/30s.)  That makes the core of the J/30 fleet down here 7 boats!

Lookin' to NOOD at St. Pete:  No, this is not about NFL player Randy MossThe St. Petersburg National Offshore One Design Regatta (NOOD) opens February 18 and goes through February 20.  Chuck Monsees plans to have his J/29 Rockette at the St. Pete NOOD and recent Lauderdale to Key West Race winner Christian Schaumloffel says he will have Mirage, Hobie 33, there too.  Neither boat saw action at KWRW.

Speaking of J/30s and Rhumb Line and Brian Gregory's newly arrived Hull #22 in particular.  Seems like they have met before.  Hull #22's name, up until now, was J-Moose.  Bill Chandler says Rhumb Line  and J-Moose raced against one another for 3 years in Charleston.  Could be a renewal of a good rivalry in the future here on the southern Bay.

Reach out and exchange nuptials:  Buddy DeRyder, who crewed on Kahuna, reports that in the Lauderdale to KW Race (the epitome of a reaching course), there was a wedding aboard one of the competing boats, a Tartan 33 named Meantime.  During the race, a pause was declared on board, tuxedos and gowns were donned and vows said before a Notary Public.  Took about 15 minutes.  Then, all things being in the proper perspective, the racers raced on!  Buddy added that the bride is the manager of the Deerfield Beach West Marine store. Is the ceremony, therefore, deductible as a business expense??

Want to be in the running for 2005 CBYRA or CCV High Point Championships?  Sure you do. So, you need to be a member of both of these organizations.  CCV Racing has already sent out renewal application forms for 2005 and so has CBYRA.  For a CCV application call Tom Peddy at (757) 651-6804, and for a CBYRA form call the CBYRA office at (410) 269-1194.  Do it now; you want to be in the hunt from the very beginning.

On the first day of racing, which was very windy, at KWRW Scuttlebutt 1756 mentioned that Bill Hardesty, sailing a Pegasus 575 (zippy sportboat), suffered a mid-race T-bone at the first leeward gate. Scuttlebutt said that Hardesty won the race "...despite sustaining minor damage when T-boned..."  Murphy the Racing Beagle said, "T-bone damage is a lot like brain surgery - it's only minor when it's not yours!"

NORTH U sailing seminars in the Southern Bay:  North U will bring two seminars to The Mariners' Museum (Newport News) in mid-February:  "Weather for Sailors" on February 12th, instructor Pat Healy ($200) and "Cruising and Seamanship" on February 13th, instructor John Rousmaniere ($160). In early March in Richmond: "Racing Trim" on March 5th ($160). The prices shown are basic prices, including course book and CD.  Lunch for each day-long seminar is an additional $10.  North U. offers a number of price discounts and interested sailors should go to the web site for discount details  www.northu.com

Pat Healy (see item above) is a Chesapeake Bay sailor who is also a trained meteorologist and has served on the coaching staff and as a weather consultant for the Canadian Olympic Team.  He was chief judge of the 2004 CBYRA Annapolis Race Week Regatta and is recognized nationally as one of the leading experts on the nuances of Rule 42 (the Propulsion rule).

US-IRC Handbook coming out soon:  Sailing World is publishing the US IRC Handbook for the 2005 season and it will be distributed with the February issue to the magazine's subscribers.  IRC is a new rating system that its supporters and officials bill as user friendly and relatively low in cost. More than 7,000 racers in 30 different countries already race under this system.  It is being tried at several notable US regattas (Block Island Race Week, SFYC Big Boat Series, and others)  Note:  There are two main types of rating certificates; at the top end of "high tech, big money, go fast" is the weigh and measure, etc. requirement.  Most handicap racers' boats would fall in the "send in the measurements and receive your certificate" group.  There is excitement about this and a lot to think about - watch for info.

Enjoy "An Evening with US Olympic Sailing Head Coach Gary Bodie" sponsored by the College of William and Mary Sailing Team at The Mariners' Museum, Saturday, February 5th, at 7:00 PM.  ($20 admission -  $5 discount for students, faculty and TMM members).  The event is to raise moolah for new FJs for the Tribe team.  For additional info, to RSVP, or to donate items for the silent auction, please email  sailin@wm.edu

To Fiddlers Green:  Andy and Virginia Armstrong, who sail their Soverel 30, Virginia H, in the PHRF fleet, have lost Andy's father, Dr. Robert Harman Armstrong, Jr. Dr. Armstrong was a long time member of CCV and Virginia said that he and the Armstrong Boys sailed against many a southern Bay racer.  Condolences to the Armstrong family.

MURPHY'S LAW:  There are good "four letter words" and bad "four letter words".  At the top of the bad list is W-O-R-K, especially when it gets in the way of the best four letter word, R-A-C-E, followed by S-A-I-L. Other good four letter racing words on a long, long list include B-E-E-R, F-O-O-D, and O-V-E-R!   /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
