SCREWPILE partying begins Saturday and racing on Sunday. Skippers are making sure they have a diver available for the last wipe down on Sunday morning. Navigators are figuring out what time the delivery crew must pull out to catch the flood bubble, and crew are getting their best regatta party duds ready. Entries will be accepted until Wednesday, July 18 (late fee applies). For general info check the web site at www.screwpile.net or contact Event Chairman, LG Raley at (301) 862-3100. It's here - the 2007 Showdown and Partydown at Solomons.STREGA WINS VET CUP; KINGFISHER Tops A Fleet and VIRGINIA H is 1st in Non-Spin: Seventeen of the 19 boats entered in the 2007 Veterans Cup, took full measure Saturday of the best the Chesapeake Bay serves on its summer menu - a steady 8 -10 knot breeze out of the west, just a hint of cloud cover, and a ruffled surface - it don't get no better in mid July! This is the first year that proceeds from the race have been designated to the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). The designs on the trophies featured the "Little Big Cats". The second leg of the race brought racers and local recreational fisherman into close proximity of one another at the Thimble Shoal Lighthouse. There was no anxiety perceived in any quarter, as most seemed interested in what the heck the "other side" was doing. RESULTS: PHRF A: 1.Dixon Wilde, Kingfisher; 2.Karl Petersen, Valkyrie. PHRF B: 1.Neal Garrett, Strega; 2.Dave Nichol, Pelican. PHRF Non-Spin: 1.Andy Armstrong, Virginia H; 2.Justin Morris, The Hunter; 3.Bob Wagner, Sea Slipper; 4.Jeff Rogers, Halaha. MG Williams, Pisky, was the only Cruising boat on the course. The winner of the Veterans Cup is determined by the largest margin over the second place boat in a fleet; Neal Garrett's Strega won PHRF B and the Cup by 7 minutes and 49 seconds. PRO: John Ritter.

Tyler Moore with crew Jessie Falsone finished 1st in the 505 Canadians.
They, in the words of fellow southern Bay 505-er, Henry Amthor, "...put on a light air clinic on Lake Ontario." Henry and his brother Doug didn't do so badly themselves; Team Amthor finished 8th, right behind 505 newbie, Chris Behm with Steve Yates (7th), among 23 competitors.

To Fiddler's Green: Southern Bay racer Trevor Pardee lost his father this past week. S. Trevor Pardee, of Newport, Rhode Island, age 86, was a member of the College Sailing Hall Of Fame and spent most of his later life sailing the Atlantic Seaboard, in the Caribbean, and Central America. Condolences are extended to Trevor and the Pardee Family.

Southern Bay Brigade to Screwpile Hits 20: Southern Bay additions to the fleet this past week include Cash Flow, Lloyd Griffin; Wairere, Pete Hunter; Pegasus, D&B Kelsey; Wavelength, Rob Whittet; White Boat, Dave McConaughy; and Valkyrie, Karl Petersen. Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge - where Bay-wide bragging rights are earned!

CAPE CHARLES CUP - August 18 and 19. This is a special happening on the southern Bay that offers something for everyone. The unique format includes a race on Saturday from Little Creek across the Bay to Cape Charles. The fleet spends the night at the gorgeous resort marina, Bay Creek, at Cape Charles - post-race party (dinner and awards) on the Bay Creek decks. Sunday, race from Cape Charles to the finish line off Buckroe - another post-race party and awards at Bay Point on Little Creek. There are starts for all PHRF Fleets (CBYRA sanctioned races with distance bonus points) as well as a Cruising Fleet. And, on top of T-shirts, a photo contest, skippers bags, regatta hats, and regatta stuff, boats that enter on or before August 1, can put a picture of the boat or crew in the 2007 CCC Yearbook. The Yearbook is included in each skipper's bag. It's on you - get entered now. For details and entry forms, go to the website www.broadbaysailing.org , or fill out the CCC entry form on page 97 of the CCV Racing Guide, or call Scott Almond at (757) 471-2663.

Spar-itis Hits PHRF A Fleet: Two southern Bay boats have been slowed way down with spar issues. Feather, Phil Briggs J36 is without her boom and Christian Schaumloffel's Mirage (Hobie 33) awaits a replacement mast. Both are heavy into the search for "boat body parts".

Blackbeard Goes Uptown! All self-respecting racers on the southern Bay know about Eddie Teach, aka Blackbeard, what with his sprints around the Bay, tangles in the Outer Banks, and reputation for bringing mayhem to many, many parties. Now, his persona is re-invented. The very venerable National Geographic has made a DVD featuring our pirate - Blackbeard, Terror at Sea. NG offers the DVD at their website www.ShopNG.org.

Southern Bay Sailmakers at Screwpile: Ken Saylor, North Sails-Hampton, will be involved with two boats in Solomons next week. He'll be part of the Cash Flow team, Lloyd Griffin's Hadley 40, during Screwpile racing and, just prior to SPLC, in the Eastport to Solomons race, will be aboard Kahuna, Sanford Richardson's "Big Red Boat" now stationed in Annapolis. Jerry Latell, Ullman Sails - Deltaville and Irvington, will be racing his own boat, Old School, an S2 7.9, at Screwpile. It'll most likely be a "family affair", with wife Andrea a key part of the Old School crew. Jimmy Miller , Quantum Sail Design-Hampton, will be on Sledd Shelhorse's Meridian 2 and Jimmy's cohort, Eddie Williams, will be sailing with David and Bumps Eberwine on Sea Star. This will be the 19th time Jim Miller has done race week at Solomon's - now that is gettin' long of tooth!.

The southern Bay 505 sailors have tagged Chris Behm, a relative newcomer to the fleet, "Grasshopper". Ah, Grasshopper - remember the name of the "ancient" TV show this comes from?

JULY Happenings: Little Bay Challenge - Saturday, July 21. Broad Bay Sailing Association and Portsmouth Boat Club go together on this event in Norfolk's Little Bay, aka Willoughby Bay. It's limited to non-spinnaker, single headsail only. The price is right - enter before 1700 hours on the Friday before race day (July 20) and it's FREE; otherwise, pay a $10 late fee on race day before the mandatory skippers meeting. For details and entry info contact Scott Almond at (757) 471-2663) or go to www.broadbaysailing.org

CCV NOT SMITH POINT RACE - Sunday, July 29. This race counts toward CCV High Point awards and is a CBYRA sanctioned event. The starting area is off Buckroe Beach and the course will be around CCV Bay marks. It is intended as a middle distance race. Racers who have a Racing Membership in CCV are automatically entered. All others must submit standard CBYRA entry form and fees no later than 1300 hours on the day before the race, Saturday, July 28. For info contact John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.

AC Flash! Louis Vuitton has bagged their sponsorship of the Challengers' Series of The America's Cup. LV had sponsored the challenger competition since 1983, but they say they are done.

Dear Readers, Yrs Truly, The Racing Beagle, and the rest of the SBRNYCU staff will push off for the SCREWPILE LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE REGATTA later this week. A lot of the southern Bay racing fleet will be in Solomons too. So, look for the next issue of SBRNYCU upon our return. And, for those who cannot make it to SCREWPILE this year, head on over to the Little Bay Challenge or take in the FBYC Cruise Regatta on Saturday, July 21. Whatever you do, do it while sailing!

MURPHY'S LAW: So, a whole pack of racers went out and raced on behalf of some fur fuzzies of the feline persuasion. That's fine; The Murphster is down with that. Those of you who want to be fair all around, send your tax-free donations to BAPA (Beagles Are Party Animals) or drop off your spare six-packs in a plain brown bag marked "FOR MURPHY" at your local sailing club - all labels accepted, cans or bottles. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
