October offers three "change of pace" events in the southern Bay:   Turkeys, Schooners, and Lighthouses!

'ROUND THE LIGHTS RACE - October 25 - sponsored by Old Point Comfort Yacht Club.   This is a CBYRA sanctioned event  for PHRF boats and it counts in the Chesapeake Bay Distance Race Series sponsored by Broad Bay Sailing Association.  There is a Cruising fleet for non-PHRF boats.  All boats must meet the PHRF 4P equipment and accommodations requirements.  Don't miss the opportunity to save money ($5) by entering before October 18th.    This event features a pursuit start and is unique in that each racer decides which lighthouse, either Middle Ground Light or Thimble Shoal Light to round first.  Be sure to study your tide and current charts!  Send your entries to OPCYC, c/o Dennis Miner, 205 Eric Nelson Run, Yorktown, VA 23693.  Or, call Dennis at (757) 867-1028.   This is a great event with a nice post-race party and awards at the OPCYC clubhouse on Ft Monroe.  Your entry fee covers skipper as well as all crew.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER!!   Beginning last  Wednesday, October 1, 2008, Cell Phone Numbers went public.  That is to say that all cell phone numbers were released to telemarketing companies.  You will start to receive sales calls and YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.  To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone:  888 - 382-1222 -  the National DO NOT CALL list. This will block your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. Or, go to www.donotcall.gov    (Thanks to Kathleen Clancy Cooper for passing this info along.)

WILLOUGHBY MEMORIAL REGATTA hosts 20 boats  in annual Willoughby Bay.  This is an annual event,  run by Broad Bay Sailing Association, where non-spinnaker boats do a pursuit race within  the confines of Norfolk's Willoughby Bay (aka Little Bay).  The boats were broken in to 3 groups for trophy and scoring purposes.  Here's how the top finishers of each group shook out:  RESULTS:  Fleet 1 (6 boats racing):  1.Bill Bounds, Summer Breeze, C&C 31; 2.Cliff Porter, Scoundrel, San Juan 24; 3.Richard "Doc" Foster, Bluejacket, Morgan 28.  Fleet 2 (8 boats racing):  1.Jonathan Phillips, Fine, Kirby 25; 2.Wally Parolari, Makaira, Catalina 320; 3.Dave Willis, Uhuru, Pearson 30.  Fleet 3 (6 boats racing): 1.Don DeLoatch, Stingray, Soverel 27; 2.Dave Bettis, Boo Nasty, Ranger 33; 3.Jay Wright, Glory Days, Cal 39.  PRO - Scott Almond.

MURPHY'S LAW:  Turkeys, Schooners, and Lighthouses, sounds like a title for a novel about the southern Chesapeake Bay.  Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle, envisions a significant, supporting role in the movie version for an especially sensitive and intelligent  "fur person" who races on sailboats!  My agent is standing by the phone.   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
