Christchurch Regatta The Christchurch Junior Challenge Regatta on May 3rd was an outstanding success, raising more than $14,000—well above the previous years' results. In all, more than 50 high school aged sailors competed for racing and fundraising honors on a wind-whipped Rappahannock River during a blustery day of northwest winds and chilly temperatures. Sponsored by Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Christchurch School, the Edward “Rip” Radcliffe family, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Virginia Chapter , this year's races drew teams from Hampton Roads Academy, Walsingham Academy, Murray High School, Norfolk Academy, and St. Catherine’s in Richmond. Competing in 420's, the junior sailors raised money from sponsors for their teams. Walsingham Academy took home the James Keith Hall Memorial Trophy as the top fundraiser in this year’s event. The Walsingham team—Garland and Taylor Gray, Justin Murray and Kelsey Olsen—raised nearly $3,500.00. Fundraisers from St, Christopher’s, Richmond, and Christchurch School finished second and third raising $2,600.00 and $2,100.00 respectively.

In its 3rd year the Christchurch Junior Challenge is sailed annually as part of the Leukemia Cup Regatta in memory of James Keith Hall, a young St. Clare Walker student, who died from leukemia three years ago at the age of thirteen. His mother, Paula Hall of Saluda, and Edward “Rip” Radcliffe of Hartfield, whose family sponsored this year’s event, were on hand to congratulate the winning racers and fundraisers.

The money that is raised in regatta-related events is used for Leukemia research and patient care here in Virginia.
