What in Tarnation is a Geezer Regatta?

old sailors.jpeg As the boomer generation transitions into its golden years, one cannot deny the competitive cravings of many of our silver-haired FBYC members over age 60. Sure, there are plenty of regattas limited to “classic” yachts but none tailored specifically for “classy” seniors. Of course the Lasers have their Masters regattas, but…get this... you only have to be 35 and up to qualify. Haw-dee-haw. Now FBYC is sponsoring a new regatta in 2011 for truly genuine masters with all those cocky young sea-lions excluded. Isn’t it about time those young-uns got their comeuppance?!

My old friend Perry Guy (a veteran Penquin and Laser skipper) and I thought it would be fun to introduce a new racing event open only to senior club skippers. While Geezer Regatta is the operative name at this time, some believe that the regatta would benefit from a name that would more respectfully honor the wisdom and skills of our club elders. So read a description below of the Geezer Regatta and then submit your entry for a new name that better reflects the concept of this regatta. Winner, or winners, will not receive a trip to Disneyland but will garner special recognition at the Geezer Regatta. And you don’t have to be over 60, nor present, to win the naming contest.

What: Regatta in Flying Scots and other OD classes with three or more entries (Lasers, Optis, 420s, Frontrunners, Mobjacks, and others are welcome) other one-design fleets with three or more yachts.

When: Saturday, August 27 – one day only

Where: FBYC

Why: For fun and Senior Club Champion bragging rights.

Who: All FBYC skippers over the age of 60. So the younger whippersnappers won’t feel entirely left out, they will be permitted to crew, but not take the helm nor ridicule the skipper. Non-members may only serve as crew.

Trophies: A mix of serious competition trophies and whimsical awards as well.

Under Consideration: Shoreside activities for non-sailors to eliminate boredom until the fleets return. How about a croquet tournament upon the club’s expansive lawn, a mahjong tournament in the glory of the club’s air-conditioned second floor facility, badminton, or other contests that may be suggested and organized by volunteers. All this is, as they say, yet-to-be-determined. (The most age-appropriate game, of course, would be shuffleboard, but, alas, the club has yet to invest in a shuffleboard court on the premises.)

The Party: The highlight of the event on Saturday evening will boast a hearty meal after cocktails and music, live or otherwise. As usual at clubhouse events, any attire will be acceptable, but wouldn’t it be wonderful to encourage those so inclined to flourish their finest Bermudian togs to truly make this a memorable and civilized event in the spirit of yesteryear. (Hmm…perhaps also there should be a cannon blast to signal the lowering of the colors at sunset.)

Help name this regatta and encourage your friends (over the age of 60) to join us in fun and games on the water. Name entries and other ideas that you would like to submit for the regatta should be forwarded to Co-Event Chairs, Perry Guy at pguy@verizon.net or Jere Dennison at jerepaula@verizon.net by March 1.

Let us also know if you would like to help with the regatta and join the distinguished committee that will run this event. Otherwise, don’t be surprised to receive a phone call to solicit your help. But whatever you do, save the date of August 27.

Remember… there is no mandatory retirement age in sailing.
