Mark Wheeler Does 3-Peat in Virginia Governor's Cup: Mark Wheeler won his third consecutive Virginia Governor's Cup this past weekend.  He's becomes only the second sailor to do so in the 39 year history of the event.  Rob Overton won the Gov's Cup in Lasers in 1984, 1985, and 1986. Wheeler, Virginia Beach (HYC) topped the 20 boat HOD class.  Ware River Yacht Club  hosted the event sailed on the Ware River (Gloucester).  The Gloucester Chamber of Commerce Cup went to the top junior sailor, Eric Brisse, 14.  Brisse hails from Tucker, Georgia, and sails in the Ware River YC junior program.  He raced in Laser (juniors) this past weekend.  Among southern Bay sailors who also had an especially good regatta were Meg Roberts, West Point, VA (FBYC), 1st in the Mobjack fleet, Rob Ragsdale, Virginia Beach, 1st the Lasers, Mark Saunders, Seaford (SSA), taking the Moth title, and Steve Bowen, Gloucester Point (YRYC) 1st in the PHRF fleet.  The Buccaneer class stayed around, and beginning this morning is deciding their North American Championship (Aug 4-8) at Ware River YC.

CBYRA REGION 4 (South Division) Interim Standings:  Region 4 official scorer Dick Boykin has released the interim standings for the PHRF Class CBYRA High Point.  Leaders of the Packs, as of July 27, are:  PHRF A:  Sea Star (J/36), Bumps and David Eberwine;  PHRF B: Cool Change (J/30), Rusty Burshell;  PHRF C:  About Time (Capri 25), Bob Archer; and, PHRF Non-Spin:  The Hunter (Hunter 26.5), Justin Morris.  So, these are the guys with the targets on their T-shirts.  Remember, ya gotta be a member of CBYRA to play.

This is always a temperamental time of year for La Chessie, and yesterday the CCV Founders Race fell victim to one of her tantrums. From 3 knots to 33 knots in about as much time as it takes to say so, and the fleet of 43 boats racing in the mouth of the Bay off Buckroe went from a tame waltz to a gear busting break dance.  As winds and waves grew rapidly and boats danced wildly, the RC decided to call a halt.  The race was abandoned and boats headed to the harbor for cover.

Public hours at the Schooner Virginia Shipyard are from Noon to 5:00 PM every Thursday through Sunday.  She is located on the river front beside Norfolk's Harbor (baseball) Park downtown.

Miranda  Wins Little Creek Cup!  Ron and Brenda Stankavich won the Little Creek Cup regatta sailed in conjunction with the St Judes Children's Research Hospital annual fundraiser.  The Stankaviches, racing  their Mariner 36 double handed, won the race footin' away.  (See "Murphy's Law" below).

Kudos to The Daily Press for their recent photo story of the Warwick Yacht & Country Club's junior program.  Boost your sport - call The Daily Press and thank them for the coverage... and tell them you'd like to see more, especially of the racing.  The DP Sports phone number is (757)  247-4630.  For Hampton Roads southsiders, The Virginian-Pilot sports number is (757) 446-2366.

Kudos to Bill and Mary Ann Galloway and their Virginia Diner for support of the Little Creep Cup/St. Judes Children's Hospital Regatta.  They stood ready to feed as many as 2000 post event party diners Saturday at Bay Point Marina.

MURPHY'S LAW:  My boat, Miranda, won the Little Creek Cup Saturday.  My helmsman and my crew, Ron and Brenda, sailed without me because of my previous commitment with a cooling backyard breeze.  They sailed "hand(s) down", so to speak, and won the whole shebang.  I'm happy for them, of course, but I will have to spend the better part of next weekend reminding them that they cannot win any post race "Barbecue and Beer Truck Title"  without me. Living to race, racing to live. /s/ Murphy the Racing Beagle
