No matter your sailor's age, experience, or sailing goals, we have a sailing activity to excite them and get them out on the water with their friends. The summer edition of the Virginia Sportsman, published this week, features both an article about our junior sailing program and an article about club member Jerry Latell, of Ullman Sails of Virginia. The junior article features a full description of our camps and is illustrated with many recent photos of sailing and camp life-including action shots on Fishing Bay and fun at the pool. The article about Jerry highlights his sail loft in Deltaville, and the fact that he is currently making sails for the USCGC Eagle, the Coast Guard sail training barque.
The magazine also has plans for a feature length article about our junior racing program in an upcoming edition. You can ...
Future College Sailors: members of the 2015 Race Team
2015-2016 was a banner year for FBYC junior graduates! FBYC had 4 sailors in major college programs: Alexander Hanna sailed for Texas A&M; Eric Roos for William & Mary; Jeremy Herrin for Old Dominion University; and Austin Powers for Christopher Newport University. We also had a graduate coaching at the college level-Cori Radtke coaches at Bowdoin College in Maine, which has one of the top collegiate sailing programs in the nation.
In the last two years, FBYC junior alums Ellen Hubbard, who sailed for the University of Virginia, and Ben and Mary Catherine Buhl, both of whom sailed for Christopher Newport, completed highly successful collegiate sailing careers.
2015 was a fantastic year for FBYC’s Laser sailors on the international stage! The North American Laser Association recently published their final 2015 Grand Prix standings in the Laser Sailor magazine. The standings are based on cumulative finishes at major North American events, including the Laser Atlantic Coast Championship, North Americans, and United States and Canadian Nationals. Jon Deutsch finished 26th in the Standard Class, out of 254 qualifying boats; Alexander Hanna finished 37th in the Radial Class out of 245 (Alexander won the 2015 ACCs, sailed at FBYC); and Jackson Montague finished 7th in the 4.7 Class out of 15 qualifying! Congratulations to all!
Fishing Bay Yacht Club is excited to announce its 2016 professional coaching staff! Once again, we will have world-class coaches with a breadth of experience as both racers and coaches. They have over 40 years of combined coaching experience. Four are returning, with our Head Coach, Tomas ("Tommy") Dietrich, in his third season at FBYC! Three of our coaches grew up in the Junior program. They will be led by Head Coach Tommy, who is himself a National and South American Champion!
TOMAS DIETRICH - HEAD COACH & OPTIMIST RACE TEAM COACH
We are extremely excited to welcome Tommy back for his third year at FBYC! In 2016 he will serve as both Head Coach and Opti Race Team Coach.

It has been a busy summer for the Junior Division, not just during Opti Kids, Junior Week, the Junior Olympics and the Race Teams, but also for our Educational Programs following Opti Kids and Junior Week. Our hope at the beginning of the summer was to keep kids on the water learning and having fun after Opti Kids and Junior Week. Parents and sailors could choose from one or all three non-racing programs, and from beginner to advanced. All were great follow-ups to the larger classes of Opti Kids and Junior Week. The primary goal was the same-to encourage kids to fall in love with sailing by having a great time! The programs were ...
I have just deleted a whole lot of clearly duplicate registrations - and left two that were the same names but at different addresses with different boats(??). That can be cleared up at the Registration Desk, and if anyone sees they have made a double payment, please try to clear it up at the desk or with me via email next week.
I just wanted to tell everyone what a great time I had at Opti-Kids at Fishing Bay the past two weekends. We learned a whole lot about sailing and boats and had great fun playing in the water. We learned that it’s not scary when a boat turns over and it’s really fun to sail. I made many great friends. We had lots of help from our mommies and daddies and Paul and Julie and Claire. They really helped us a lot. The snacks and watermelon were great. I also loved swimming in the pool after sailing. I hope that I can go sailing more in the future.
Last Friday we took delivery of our club’s newest RIB! The very next day it was put to work as a safety boat on the junior course at the Open House Regatta, and to ferry passengers to and from the sunflower raft-up. The boat is a 17’ Apex, and is the third RIB, and sixth coach boat, in our fleet. It is perfect for coaching juniors and makes a perfect safety and mark boat for both the Offshore and One-Design Divisions.
This year we will have 44 kids on our four summer race teams alone-and this boat will be put to use during Junior Week, Spring/Fall Race Teams, Summer Race Teams and all ...
Come out and enjoy the balmy weather! On March 29th, the FBYC Junior Spring Opti and Laser Race Teams will begin their season. Come and join the fun-Spring is here!
