Year after year, a common bit of feedback from parents are "it is so amazing how many people volunteer for the week", "We love coming here because it is not paid, bored staff running the camp, but volunteers passionate about what they do", and similar themed gushing about our volunteers. 

Without you, the FBYC Junior Week would not be the powerful experience it is.  Countless volunteers man safety boats, coordinate the Junior Shed supplies, manage the safe entry of boats in and out of the water on the ramps, give out bandaids and scoop ice cream!  We encourage you to look at the signup genius and see if there are a few hours where you can give your time, whether ...

We have had a great start to the sailing season for our junior race team sailors.  Under wonderful coaching from our three returning coaches from Argentina:  Tommy Dietrich, Tom Peligero and Francisco Renna our Race teams have grown once again to include for the first time a 420 Race team.

The season started with junior week which was a great success followed by our Annual Junior Regatta.  The team’s right out of the gate did a fabulous job with Boyd Bragg taking first in 420’s, Madeline Amthor first overall in Opti is with Josh Bendura a close second.  We had five of the top 10 spots for Opti is overall including John Vail, Reed McAllister and ...

Registration for the 2017 Junior Regatta Now Open

This year’s Junior Regatta will consist of two days of racing with approximately three to five races per day.  There will be three separate courses:

1) Laser Radials; Laser 4.7’s; 420’s

2) Optimist Red/Blue/White  (as defined by USODA)

3) Optimist Green  (as defined by USODA)

In addition to the separate course, the Opti Green fleet will also receive coaching and an instructional clinic. One dinner and a free tee shirt are provided to each participant if they preregister prior to June 19. Online registration is available by clicking here.

We are less than a month away from the start of the 2017 summer Junior programs and we need your help!  We have a score of campers who need Optis for the Opti Kids weekends and Junior Week.

Please contact A.L. Braun (AnnLisa.Braun@bdnreit.com) if you have an Opti to spare and would like to help one of our campers.

The Junior Program volunteers and participants would greatly appreciate any gear donation you could make – we especially need sails.

Austin sailing for Christopher Newport University

This week our own Austin Powers was named the 2017 Robert Purrington Award recipient for the Mid-Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. Austin is a senior at Christopher Newport University, and sailed all four of his years at the school on the varsity sailing team. He served as co-captain for three of those years. The award is given to “recognize a graduating senior from the conference who has made outstanding contributions to college sailing”. Online registration for the Summer Junior programs, originally scheduled to launch on Wednesday, February 1st, has been set up and will be available to the public as soon as testing can be completed. 

It will use the new registration system which we launched in the fall of 2016 and which was very well received.  In addition it uses a new payment system from www.stripe.com which had no payment issues or errors last fall for the Commodore's Ball.

Junior Week is Not Just for the Kids!

There's still time to sign-up for Junior Week's Sailing Seminars....for the ADULTS.  Learn how to troubleshoot problems with a diesel engine; the latest in IPAD navigation; how to anchor in our neck of the bay; and docking made easy!

A happy camper at Opti Kids

The summer edition of the Virginia Sportsman, published this week, features both an article about our junior sailing program and an article about club member Jerry Latell, of Ullman Sails of Virginia. The junior article features a full description of our camps and is illustrated with many recent photos of sailing and camp life-including action shots on Fishing Bay and fun at the pool. The article about Jerry highlights his sail loft in Deltaville, and the fact that he is currently making sails for the USCGC Eagle, the Coast Guard sail training barque.

Future College Sailors: members of the 2015 Race Team

2015-2016 was a banner year for FBYC junior graduates! FBYC had 4 sailors in major college programs: Alexander Hanna sailed for Texas A&M; Eric Roos for William & Mary; Jeremy Herrin for Old Dominion University; and Austin Powers for Christopher Newport University. We also had a graduate coaching at the college level-Cori Radtke coaches at Bowdoin College in Maine, which has one of the top collegiate sailing programs in the nation.

In the last two years, FBYC junior alums Ellen Hubbard, who sailed for the University of Virginia, and Ben and Mary Catherine Buhl, both of whom sailed for Christopher Newport, completed highly successful collegiate sailing careers.

FBYC Juniors Dominate 2015 CBYR High Point Awards!

 On Saturday March 5th the Maryland Yacht Club hosted the 2015 CBYRA High Point Awards, with FBYC Juniors winning 18 of 43 awards! Over 346 sailors competed in 28 regattas and our sailors shined.

 Our Opti Team had 7 of the top 15 sailors including top overall Opti winner Benton Amthor and Opti Blue winner Guthrie Braun with Madeline Amthor as the number 3 Opti Girl.

 The laser team was equally as impressive with 7 of the top 15 overall sailors as well! Garret Levy was FBYC’s top finisher in 3rd place and Amanda Almany was ...

2016 Summer Junior Coaches Announced

Fishing Bay Yacht Club is excited to announce its 2016 professional coaching staff! Once again, we will have world-class coaches with a breadth of experience as both racers and coaches. They have over 40 years of combined coaching experience. Four are returning, with our Head Coach, Tomas ("Tommy") Dietrich, in his third season at FBYC! Three of our coaches grew up in the Junior program. They will be led by Head Coach Tommy, who is himself a National and South American Champion!
