Offshore Racing
Mark Wheeler, at his base of operations in Virginia Beach (wishing he was with his mates on Pat Patterson's Orion in the Newport to Bermuda Race),  reports that as of this morning's position reports, ORION is leading her fleet boat for boat into Bermuda and the finish line.  With 40 nautical miles to go the southern Bay homies  (Norfolk/Hampton) had a 9 nm lead on FireFly.

 LASER SPRING SERIES #5

Jon Deutsch on

ILCA Logo - Small
The 2004 Spring Series came to an end for the Laser Fleet with 5 boats participating.  The shifty and unpredictable winds kept the racing close and the solid breeze made the reaching legs a lot of fun.  In the first race Brad Squires got an early lead and held on throughout the rest of the race.  He was followed by Alain, Jon and Dave.

The rest of the day belonged to late-comer James Jacobs who won all of the last three races.  With Brad, Jon and Dave on his heels, James was never able to get too far out ahead waving to passing motor boats as he seemed to motor between the marks.  In the …

BLACK SEAL CUP-SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK: TITILLATION  WINS OVERALL TITLE, DOMINATES 17 BOAT PHRF B:  Chessie served up a varied menu over the three day event.  56 "big boats" sailed on two venues in all kinds of conditions over the weekend.  BSC-SBRW opened Friday on a wild and wooly day, winds averaging a steady mid to high teens (highest gust reported was 25 knots) with wind against current making for significant square waves (three and one-half feet).  The second day Chessie offered up perfect racing conditions with breezes going southwest in the 10-14 range.  And, Day 3 brought frustration because of the light and variable conditions.  The RC did get in one race on each venue on Sunday …

FBYC Spring Series 4 on Sunday June 6

Jon Deutsch on

ILCA Logo - Small
The FBYC Laser fleet once again saw great racing in some fluky winds on Fishing Bay.  The first race was one to play the shifts on and Alain played best; Jon, Brad and Dave weren't far behind.

The north-west wind lightened for the 2nd race and all of the boats had trouble 'beating' to the first 'weather' mark.  The fleet eventually rounded and Brad found a slight breeze way out in the middle of the channel while the rest of the lasers drifted about in the middle of the course.  Despite protest to the committee to wave off the race, the boats continued on their slow journey to the bottom mark.  Sure enough …
