A Classic Night on the Bay - Smith Point Race 2010

Allan Heyward on

Offshore Racing

There are no known pictures to prove or disprove the yarns shared and claims made at brunch Sunday morning about the 2010 Smith Point Race, started August 21. The Race Committee can, however, confirm that vicious tides, a prestart wind shift and light air at the start brought a couple of competitors to an intimacy with the Race Committee's anchor line neither desired nor intended, but all ten boats got off safely in 4-6 knots of breeze at 2:00 in the afternoon. The forecast held, and the wind slowly but steadily built to a solid 10-12 knot southerly breeze for the sprint up the bay.

Four PHRF A boats sailed the 59 mile course east to the cut …

FBYC Team Wins Rhodes 19 Class at Nantucket Race Week

Noel Clinard on

nyc.jpg A team of three FBYC trained sailors placed first in Nantucket Race Week, One Design Series, Rhodes 19 Class, with three days of racing. The Toni Too was skippered by Sophie Massie, with crew of her father, Mike Massie, and Noel Clinard. Over three days and nine races, they placed 1-3-1-2-2-[7]-[DNS]-2-2 with the two bracketed races thrown out. Results Here.

The racing was characterized by moderate to heavy winds and strong harbor currents. Sophie drove with Mike trimming jib and working foredeck and Noel trimming main and spinnaker. The upwind speed of Toni Too was the deciding factor with frequent leads at the windward mark, which turned into a liability in one race. Days One and Three …

40886_426933773362_507373362_4644288_1074765_n.jpgGreat weather, great racing, and great people, is the best description of the 2010 Annual One Design Regatta. 118 boats competed in eleven different fleets during two days of the nicest weather we have seen in a while. Saturday presented temperatures in the 80’s and a gentle breeze out of the east. Sunday the temperatures remained mild while the winds picked up providing all fleets with plenty of breeze and spirited racing.

This year’s event saw record breaking attendance from the Flying Scot Fleet with 36 boats registered. Additionally, the San Juan 21s showed up again with the largest numbers to date. For the first time in many years a Windmill fleet consisting of 7 boats joined us …

Cruising News - August 2010

Cruising News
The cruising regatta attracted 10 boats which turned into a drifting match but Chilcoot prevailed to finish first. The race committee of Ric and Sharon Bauer did a stellar job of running the race and attempting to fairly rate the boats. I think we learned a few things about handicapping this year which we can carry over to next year. After the race we had dinner with 42 people attending. A good time was had by all.

On July 28 the progressive dinner was held with 28 people attending. Cocktails were had at Sarah Carneal's home with dinner up river at Andy and Ellen Soyars home. It was a hot evening as it was 98 that day but fans …

Centenary Cruise "Sunflower"

Randy Alley on

Cruising News

A wonderful video from the Clyde Cruising Club's attempt to break their previous record number of boats forming a sunflower during the Centenary Cruise. They didn't quite get the 200 boats they had hoped for, but, still, quite a muster. Must have been a great experience for the Crumps, Garretts, and Haywards.

Well worth a look: Centenary Cruise Sunflower

We have revamped the Pirate Cruz event originally envisioned for Little Bay in an attempt to address the diversity of requests, conflicting club and personal schedules. We have heard that some members would like to participate in the event but do not have access to a "cruising" boat. Others are participating in the Annual One Design Regatta and many juniors are being recruited to participate in the regatta as well. Still others have conflicts with work or family schedules, which limit their availability for an extended weekend cruise. As a result, we made the following adjustments:

Webmasters are critical to events in these days and times.   We have a lot of good ones in the sailing community and certainly on the southern Bay.   Folks who give their time and genius to special racing events  on the southern Bay certainly come to mind - most recently, Jon Deutsch (2010 Opti National Championship Regatta), and Buddy DeRyder (Southern Bay Race Week for the Black Seal Cup).  It's a tough job requiring talent, time, skill, patience, and judgment.

Fishing Bay Yacht Club is hosting their  71st Annual One Design Regatta, in two weeks, August 14 & 15.  Classes expected include: 420, Albacore, Hampton, Flying Scot, Front Runner, Laser, Laser Radial, Mobjack, and Optimist.  The FBYC-ers …
