Junior Sailors Set Fundraising Record

catesby jones on

Leukemia Cup
Junior sailors from across Tidewater and Central Virginia out-did themselves in this year's Christchurch Leukemia Cup Junior Challenge, although the record-setting effort was not done on the water. Gusty ENE winds scrubbed the scheduled races on the Rappahannock River in this year's regatta at Christchurch, but the young sailors raised almost $21,000 to fight leukemia.      "It was an awesome accomplishment," said Kristin Stokes, regatta coordinator for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. "This puts things into perspective when we look at what these kids can do."Overall, the 50 or so young sailors representing eight area schools took part. The leading fundraising schools were St. Christopher's of Richmond, Walsingham Academy of Williamsburg and regatta host, Christchurch School …

Must-See TV: Jobson's '25 Years Of Sailing' tonite at 9PM

Offshore Racing
By Rich Roberts For YachtRacing.com

The title, "25 Years of Sailing," may not excite the masses. Even a young Ted Turner states in an opening film clip from the eve of the U.S.'s loss of the America's Cup in 1983: "I wouldn't say the nation's prestige is at stake. It's just a sailboat race, really."

But a sneak preview of Gary Jobson's one-hour special on ESPN Classic Wednesday night (6 and 9 p.m. PT, 9 p.m. ET) reveals it as more than just a sailing show, skipping from highlight to highlight. There are plenty of those, but this is just for sailors like "Seabiscuit" was just for horse racing fans …

Leukemia Cup
What do sailing, power boating and kayaking have in common – with baseball? Well, baseball will be joining the line-up of events for this year’s Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta. The occasion is the Inaugural “Leukemia Cup Regatta Night at the Ball Park” at 7:30pm on Saturday, June 19. For the first time, fans and players will be joining a host of other participants, sponsors and contributors in raising money to fight leukemia, the leading disease killer of children.

“This is a special cause and this will be a special game,” says Mike Ward, publicity manager for the Deltaville Deltas. “We expect plenty of action when the Deltas square off against the Fredericksburg Meadow Farm team. And, I can …

Coming up in June is a brand-new addition to this year's line up of regatta events, Leukemia Cup Night at the Ball Park," takes place Saturday night, June 19th. "Our goal is to reach out to increased numbers of people, sailors and non-boaters alike, who might want to support us in this important fundraising cause," says Brenda Coffman, coordinator of the baseball event. ‘We have learned that many, many people will take part if we provide events they can get behind, enjoy and support." For newcomers to Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Mothers Day is sacred, and the club studiously avoids scheduling races for the entire weekend. So what can you do? Come to the club and join in the VIMS activity, enjoy their landing craft displays and their lectures. Alternatively take your mother, or your grandmother out for a sail. If you own a J-105 it's a shoe-in, the maker adverizes the J-105 as a boat that Granny can day sail. Or take the lady out for lunch, she certainly deserves no less. But if you are really ambitious join your Commodore and his first lady on a trip to Washington, DC to join some 100,000 or more mothers asking Congress, some …

FISHING BAY YACHT CLUB J/29 INVITATIONAL REGATTA
APRIL 16-18, 2004

Eight boats came to FBYC in Deltaville, Virginia for the sixth annual J/29 Invitational Regatta. The weather was horrible all week—cold, rainy and very windy. On Thursday, as participants were getting their boats ready, the rain finally stopped and the wind started to decrease, somewhat.

Friday dawned sunny and clear with a spring nip in the air. The wind blew 6-10 and shifty. David Lee, the PRO, and his race committee were very busy moving marks but managed to get in 4 good races. Patriot won the day with 3 bullets and a 6th. Titillation was just 1 point behind. Hustler had a spinnaker halyard jump the …

Having Trouble Building a Winning Program? Here are Twenty One Team Building techniques we've observed.

1 - When it is time to put the jib up prior to the start on a blustery day, sail a close reach to maximize spray across the foredeck. By soaking the crew prior to the start they won't be so reluctant to get wet during the race. Do not reach off in an effort to keep the foredeck dry.

2 - If things are going …
