Last night the FBYC Team, Coach and Entourage paused from the intensity of the Campaign for some fun, refreshment and companionship at the Clark Cooke House restaurant on the wharf in downtown Newport. In attendance were the team (Travis Weisleder, Lud Kimbrough, Ben Buhl and Rob Whittimore, their Coach, Skip Dieball, and the rest of the FBYC entourage including Shannon Weisleder, Frances and Blake Kimbrough, Mary and Jay Buhl, Mike Karn, and Noel and Meg Clinard. Commodore Mayo Tabb will join us tomorrow on the spectator fleet. The team had a very "full course meal" from Chowder and Organic Tomato salads to Seafood Linguini, wine, coffee and desserts, including "Snowballs From Hell" served in chocolate coated goblets. But, it was …
Fishing Bay Yacht Club is among the top 12 teams that have qualified for the Championship Series at the 2010 NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series. After completing fourteen races in 2 days in both Sonars and J22s, the team advances on to two days of championship racing on Thursday and Friday in Sonars at New York Yacht Club in Newport.
The team began the day sailing the J22 with a bullet in the first race. They followed that with a 6 and a 2 before switching to the Sonar for the final 3 races. After posting solid mid-fleet finishes with one race left, the team had an 8 point cushion for making it into the championship fleet.
Wednesday was the first day of racing at the NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series. Our Team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Ben Buhl and Lud Kimbrough were sailing against some very tough competition which included past Sonar North American Champions and Olympic sailors.
The 24 teams are divided into 2 groups with one group sailing Sonars and the other J22 in the morning. Then in the afternoon they switch boats. They will do this for racing Wednesday and Thursday, then starting Friday, the top 12 teams will sail in Sonars and the bottom half in J22.
Conditions to start the regatta on Wednesday were very windy. Initially the race committee forbid the boats from flying spinnakers for the first two …
Travis, Rob, Ben & Lud on Narraganset Bay in heavy air with a spinnaker on a J-22.
The FBYC team finished a brutal day of practice in 20 to 30 knot winds in the less familiar J-22 in Newport Harbor, including a screaming downwind run featured in the attached video shot from the coach boat, followed by two near broaches and man overboards. After nursing their wounds and resting for a few hours, the team and its supporters attended a splendid reception on the lawn at NYYC's Harbour Court, where they were welcomed by Commodore Elwell as representatives of 24 of the nation's "preeminent yacht clubs." As one entered the reception, beneath the awning, the FBYC Burgee hung …
0800 on Tuesday, NYYC staff hoist colors and erect 24 participating club burgees around moored and tuned Sonar Fleet for initial practice day.
The team will have a workout today and their weigh-in this morning followed by official practice races in the afternoon.
Yesterday the team spent some time practicing on a J22. The wind was light in the morning, but filled in the afternoon with a 10-14k sea breeze. The team had to alter their crew positions for that boat and after 20-30 tacks and gybes were feeling pretty comfortable in the J22.

Latane Montague made it his
5th Hampton One-Design National Championship at the
HOD Class showdown in Fishing Bay this past weekend. Latane has won
the title in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2009, and, now, in 2010. Thirteen (13) HODs
raced in light air on opening day Friday, got in three nice races on
Saturday, and squeezed two more in on Sunday; the total of 6 allowed for
one throw-out in the final tabulations. Latane sailed with crew
Jaci Finney. Second overall was Gordon
Wolcott with crew Perrin Priest, and third was
Eddie Wolcott sailing with Rachael
Blake. Fishing Bay Yacht Club hosted the event. Complete

There are no known pictures to prove or disprove the yarns shared and claims made at brunch Sunday morning about the 2010 Smith Point Race, started August 21. The Race Committee can, however, confirm that vicious tides, a prestart wind shift and light air at the start brought a couple of competitors to an intimacy with the Race Committee's anchor line neither desired nor intended, but all ten boats got off safely in 4-6 knots of breeze at 2:00 in the afternoon. The forecast held, and the wind slowly but steadily built to a solid 10-12 knot southerly breeze for the sprint up the bay.
Four PHRF A boats sailed the 59 mile course east to the cut …
A team of three FBYC trained sailors placed first in Nantucket Race Week, One Design Series, Rhodes 19 Class, with three days of racing. The Toni Too was skippered by Sophie Massie, with crew of her father, Mike Massie, and Noel Clinard. Over three days and nine races, they placed 1-3-1-2-2-[7]-[DNS]-2-2 with the two bracketed races thrown out. Results Here.
The racing was characterized by moderate to heavy winds and strong harbor currents. Sophie drove with Mike trimming jib and working foredeck and Noel trimming main and spinnaker. The upwind speed of Toni Too was the deciding factor with frequent leads at the windward mark, which turned into a liability in one race. Days One and Three …

Great weather, great racing, and great people, is the best description of the 2010 Annual One Design Regatta. 118 boats competed in eleven different fleets during two days of the nicest weather we have seen in a while. Saturday presented temperatures in the 80s and a gentle breeze out of the east. Sunday the temperatures remained mild while the winds picked up providing all fleets with plenty of breeze and spirited racing.
This years event saw record breaking attendance from the Flying Scot Fleet with 36 boats registered. Additionally, the San Juan 21s showed up again with the largest numbers to date. For the first time in many years a Windmill fleet consisting of 7 boats joined us …
The cruising regatta attracted 10 boats which turned into a drifting match but Chilcoot prevailed to finish first. The race committee of Ric and Sharon Bauer did a stellar job of running the race and attempting to fairly rate the boats. I think we learned a few things about handicapping this year which we can carry over to next year. After the race we had dinner with 42 people attending. A good time was had by all.
On July 28 the progressive dinner was held with 28 people attending.
Cocktails were had at Sarah Carneal's home with dinner up river at Andy and Ellen Soyars home. It was a hot evening as it was 98 that day but fans …
