Your historian had the occasion recently to contemplate the swift passage of time, when, serendipitously, he received a parcel of old photos from member Evelyn Turner through member John Koedel. Your Memorial Day holiday weekend will not be complete without attending the FBYC reception at the Deltaville Maritime Museum in honor of our new permanent exhibit. The reception will include beverages and heavy hors d’oeuvres to delight the palate. The event is open to all members but you first must register online.
Cost to attend is $15/adult with juniors admitted free. $10 of each admission ticket will be donated to the Deltaville Maritime Museum which has partnered with us in the past to stage important sailing events, such as the Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regattas and the 2010 Optimist Nationals.

As has been the case over the past few summers, our Operations Manager, Dixon Cole, is looking for an able-bodied summer assistant. Employee will report directly to Dixon and assist in the maintenance of club facilities and equipment. Ideally, this person would be a high school or college student with accommodations in the Deltaville area. Weather permitting, we plan to sail to Cape Charles on 6/23, then start early the next morning for Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard. Clean drinking water is critical to the future of the Deltaville and more sign-ups are needed to justify constructing the planned water system. The deadline to enroll is early June, so sign up now HERE . If you have already signed up, we need you to reach out to your neighbors to encourage their enrollment, too. The One Design racing season kicked off last Saturday. Five Scots and one FrontRunner took place in the racing while another Scot skated around to the side tuning their boat. To help shake off some of the cobwebs PRO, Jim Raper, organized five practice starts which was a good warm-up.
With everyone ready and energized, the first race was launched. Well, not everyone was completely ready. Most forgot what a W2 race course was and rounded the leeward mark heading for the second beat. All, except the sage Hal Starke who went straight through the line and took the bullet. This Saturday, April 30th at 2PM on Fanny’s Back Porch, a beginners’ Race Committee Training class will be held. We’re using US Sailing’s, ‘Join the Race Committee Team’ pamphlet as a guide, supplemented by the other material that the club has put together over the years. The goal is to provide enough information and handouts so that members and others who participate, understand and can fulfill each RC function before, during and after an event – with zero stress. It’s a two-hour functional class covering each RC position and how each role fits into the overall race management objective.
Future College Sailors: members of the 2015 Race Team
2015-2016 was a banner year for FBYC junior graduates! FBYC had 4 sailors in major college programs: Alexander Hanna sailed for Texas A&M; Eric Roos for William & Mary; Jeremy Herrin for Old Dominion University; and Austin Powers for Christopher Newport University. We also had a graduate coaching at the college level-Cori Radtke coaches at Bowdoin College in Maine, which has one of the top collegiate sailing programs in the nation.
In the last two years, FBYC junior alums Ellen Hubbard, who sailed for the University of Virginia, and Ben and Mary Catherine Buhl, both of whom sailed for Christopher Newport, completed highly successful collegiate sailing careers.
2015 was a fantastic year for FBYC’s Laser sailors on the international stage! The North American Laser Association recently published their final 2015 Grand Prix standings in the Laser Sailor magazine. The standings are based on cumulative finishes at major North American events, including the Laser Atlantic Coast Championship, North Americans, and United States and Canadian Nationals. Jon Deutsch finished 26th in the Standard Class, out of 254 qualifying boats; Alexander Hanna finished 37th in the Radial Class out of 245 (Alexander won the 2015 ACCs, sailed at FBYC); and Jackson Montague finished 7th in the 4.7 Class out of 15 qualifying! Congratulations to all!
FBYC's J70 Pied Piper, with 13 year old Gannon and his Dad, Dan, sailing with former FBYC Coaches Victor Diaz de Leon and Thomas Dietrich, have accomplished an extraordinary result at Charleston Race Week in a fleet of 67 boats.
Pied Piper was second overall in the J70 Fleet with 21 points, barely losing a tie-breaker with the 2015 CRW repeat winner and World Champion Julian Fernades Neckelman aboard Flojito de Cooperando, also with 21 points, finishing the last race Second and Third, tipping the tie-breaker to Fernandes.
Because of the fleet size, the J70s were divided into 4 fleets, and sailed a round robin, as in an Opti Championship Fleet. So the 18 Races scored are actually 9 …
The 2016 sailing season is finally here. Our One Design Opening Day is on Saturday 4/23! Our enthusiasm for the sailing season skyrocketed when we took the boat to the club and attended the Opening Day social. We still need to find all the boat parts, but she looks pretty inviting parked with all the other Scots. Just wish we could be there this weekend to step the mast and get out for a practice sail.
Looking at the attached schedule, it's clear that there is a lot of great sailing to be done at FBYC and within a reasonable drive. Of course the big regatta for our fleet is the Wife Husband Regatta to be held …
Everyone using Jackson Creek should be aware that significant shoaling continued between #7 & 9 over the winter.
Paul Almany has provided this depth contour which shows a 5ft MLW section before you approach #9 when entering Jackson Creek. The picture shows his color chart countour overlayed on the 2014 Army Corps of Engineers depth survey chart. From the chart looks like we will need to run a curve with the greatest distance away from #9 occurring about 200ft before and about 150 to the north.

67 people were in attendance at the Blue Water Cruising Event held at the Omni Hotel in Richmond on March 30th. Experienced off-shore sailers, Rob and Andi Overton gave a well documented account of their trials and tribulations of their 15 years at sea. They offered helpful tips and antidotes of their adventures around the world upon their 50ft yacht, the Akka. It was an informative and entertaining presentation enjoyed by all.

The PRO for tomorrows race has determined, and I completely agree, that it would be unsafe to race tomorrow. We have 2 problems with the conditions for racing.
First is the bad weather, which most models have predicted winds close to 30 MPH with higher gusts- rain squalls- temps around 45.
Second Mr Roberts is not fully commissioned (due to launch this AM).
The Opening Day Blessing of the Fleet and Party will both be inside the Club House. Both training sessions on Sunday are also cancelled.
